Kate Fisher Ceramics
My tutor pointed out a good course at home in Norfolk, the Design Crafts BA (Hons) degree at Lowestoft college. Here I was introduced to woodwork metal work and ceramics as well as textiles. Originally I did not try the potter’s wheel, but when lunchtime workshops were organised for those who wanted to try it, and I’d had a go I was hooked!
When my first year finished I decided to specialise in ceramics. I was taught by Pat Southwood and Stephen Baker. Stephen helped me to find and develop my style. I feel very lucky to have had him as my teacher because we liked similar things from ceramic form. I value his opinion greatly.
I graduated in 2007 and in March 2009 started to rent my business property in Pulham Market.
I now make both functional and sculptural pieces while developing my work further.
I enjoy making shapes with crisp lines and fine rims, proportionate curves and slight angles. I use a range of glazes but my favourites at the moment are satin glazes because they are safe to use for domestic ware but do not have too much gloss in them so the form can be seen more easily without a reflection distorting them.
